PHP version

Most hosting providers upgrade the PHP version to 5.1.4, and still we are using version 4.4.4
My question: is their any difference in reliability and servers ability, or still the same

pyou can ask for a upgraded. A few servers (including mine) run PHP5. Most people have PHP4 software as people are still writting most opensource to be PHP4. PHP5 is more OOP and has contructors and destructors. It also has mysqli (which is not used too frequently). If you want PHP 5 file a ticket asking for it and they will move you. Keep in mine that your site will be down for a day and dont foret to include the last 4 digits of your CC just so they know it is your account.

If they upgrade server programs components, that means the modification will be for all sites located

Not true. If you will carefully read AceOfSpade's response, you will see that it says
If you want PHP 5 file a ticket asking for it and they will move you. What he means is that they will move your account to a server on which PHP 5 is installed.

Perhaps. But it is also true that some scripts won't work correctly using PHP5. If BH switched everyone over to PHP5 many of our sites would quit working.

Hope I'm not hijacking the thread here...
I too have some questions. I understand that we can be moved to the php 5 server, but which php 5 is running on that server. It makes a difference in how I write my scripts.

Unfortunately, while this may be true in some cases, many scripts will not behave properly in PHP5.
You have the option to be moved to a server that does have PHP5 installed if you want.

PHP4 is stable, and if it ain't broke, why fix it?

I just purchased an account from BlueHost.com. The reason I chose BlueHost over another local competitor was that BlueHost.com offered PHP5 and I wanted to develop a site with the new technology.

I think there needs to be a bit of work on making the 4.44 to 5 migration smoother. I suspect that many people, like me, who buy new accounts want to start with the new stuff.

I was frustrated that I joined BlueHost to get PHP5, but couldn't find anything about it in the FAQs. I disliked having to open a trouble ticket on the first day of the account. I waited six hours, and the ticket was closed with the response that I am supposed to give the last four digits of my credit card number to authorize. The credit card thing really shouldn't be a requirement for brand new accounts.

Anyway, I hope the account gets moved soon; so I can upload data and see how BlueHosts stacks up. I suspect that there will be many people like me who want to start with PHP5. This is a process that should be made smoother for newbies.
