View Full Version : SPF - TXT records set up by bluehost?

A frriend that received an email from me mentioned that I had enabled SPF. I couldn't remember enabling this, so I looked up the TXT record for my domain name (handy site for doing this: www.dnsstuff.com) and sure enough it says:

"v=spf1 a mx ptr include:bluehost.com ?all"

Has bluehost added these TXT records themselves? Just wondering.

I couldn't remember if I'd done this myself a few months ago, because I looked into SPF briefly a few months ago before deciding it was too convoluted/bothersome and gave up. At that time, the same friend commented that I didn't have SPF enabled and that it was worth doing. So I at least know this wasn't originally setup when I added the domain and MX record to my bluehost hosting a few months prior to that.

I logged into my bluehost control panel and battled my way through all that cpanel nonsense (I hate cpanel), and I could find the MX record, but no TXT record. Perhaps I missed it, but it at least confirmed I didn't visit that a few months ago otherwised it would of probably recalled setting it up.

So anyway, has anyone else noticed a TXT record being added to their domain?

Another thing I makes me thing it wasn't me that added this, is because it includes "bluehost.com" in the string, and I'd probably not thought to do that because my mail is not handled by bluehost - the MX record points to a separate IMAP service provider, which I also use for sending mail (SMTP).

Another thing by the way, is the use of "?all" in the string. I havent got my head around the string, but it looks like that isn't taking full advantage of SPF.

If you do not want the SPF record that has been provided, or want it to be something different, please contact support.

The records were added a few months ago in the ongoing efforts to reduce spam and make the system better for the customers. Overall, it has helped quite a bit, but if your MX record already goes somewhere else, it doesn't make sence to tag the bluehost servers in the SPF. We did what we could to not add an SPF in these circumstances, but may have missed some.

AKA, call or email support if you want/need something different. They will be happy to update it.
