just wondering if anyone needed to learn this,
i noticed bluehost puts one my page automatically
that is THEIR icon. if you don't know what i mean,
i am referring to the tiny image file next to the URL
when you browse your site. if anyone wants to learn
how to use this and make their own icons for their
sites instead of using the bluehost "grid" thing,
http://www.scriptsearch.com/cgi-bin/jump.cgi?ID=1327
is a good tutorial.
i figured i should post this in attempts to build good karma
with others here :) i'm sure ill need your help in the near future.

i think you can also make a 16x16 png file and rename it to favicon.ico and that works

cool, thats good for those who don't have an .ico making program. there are a lot at shareware.com, but they have limitations on how many files you can save and such. good to know a good work-around.

yeh...but the renamed png to ico seems to only work for like webpages... not a normal computer icon.

yeah, try that as a desktop icon and you'll get an error.;)
Too bad IE doesn't display .ico files correctly in the address bar :rolleyes:

Changing the favicon.ico may be one of the first things you want to do. This is the tool that I use and I've been quite pleased with it. It's free and accessible from anywhere.

Too Easy...
You can download a FREE Icon editor that will take any .PNG graphic and convert to .ico on save. here is the link below and all they ask is for an email and name...use a fake one too if you want. If you find it useful send me an email and they I will add to my website. thanks. mailto:webmaster@mikesweb.org
Junior Icon Editor (http://www.sibcode.com/junior-icon-editor/) (Less Than 1MB)
P.S. I have personally used it and most newer browsers don't need scripts to add when you bookmark. Hope it helps! ;)
P.S.S. Just be sure to drop the favicon.ico in your [ROOT] folder.

The bluehost icon is the only thing that has annoyed me so far. The solution is to make your own, which I've done but what if I don't want one, who wants the bluehost grid?

I've just moved to BlueHost. Saw this thread and thought I'd mention that I have a tutorial on favicon that quite a lot of people seem to have found useful. It's at:
http://www.purple-owl.com/favicon.html
There's an easier way to get rid of that icon: set its permissions to 000.

If you just want to quickly convert an image you have lying around go to http://www.chami.com and use their converter.
Itīll take you 10 seconds and you have a favicon. It even has a gif favicon option but that may be a bit to much for some sites.

I was going to add this link. I have it bookmarked. The grid ico would be my one gripe w/ BH. If you don't want anything there, you could make a blank/all white ico and upload it. Personally, I think they help a lot with finding a site in my history list or my favorites list.

Using this free web tool is a lot easier and faster.

You upload one of many file types and it will make you a favicon.ico file on the spot.

hi all,
the direct link to the favicon creator is
http://www.html-kit.com/favicon/
It now allows animated favicons.
Just keep in mind that your favicon.ico should not exceed 4-5 kb

I don't think you need tutorial for that, too much hasl for tiny thing.
here example:
<head>
<title>
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico">
</title>
</head>
If you cant make favico locally you can make one online,
http://www.degraeve.com/favicon/
or
http://www.htmlkit.com/services/favicon/
then upload to your server and overwrite old one:
done and done.
