I love the reliability of Bluehost.com. I'm posting a poll,
If Bluehost.com provided the option for dedicated servers (and the option for either Windows Server or Linux to be installed on it), would you be interested in purchasing it?

Yuk what is wrong with you. Noone uses windows servers execept people who have M$ addiction. It has been proven that people with M$ Addiction are worse than coke addicts. They cant even consider the open source and spend their life saving on crappy microsoft apps that have a much better open source alternatives.
And if you even mention ASP i WILL KILL YOU. I HATE ASP!!!! AHHHHHR
You have just put me into a rage.
Now seriously just use linux server. Windows servers are slow and thie r is no decent programs for microsoft programing languges. PHP is the most popular languge by far and ror is the fasting growing for larger servers.
Anyways I vote linux because the amount of money windows raises the price is simply shocking.

Are you implying that PHP won't run on Windows?

I voted yes-linux BUT would be more interested in a vps or multi-site system... ie 10 domains with options of seperate cpanel environment. I host my own business, ex's business, daughters site and then 2 personal so would LOVE to be able to give them their own cp and get them out of my space :( then I could charge the businesses their space too!

The common setup of linux dedicated server (I've been hired to work with servers hosted by 5 or 6 different hosting companies during last two year) includes WHM and cPanel for each account, and I've never met any limitations on how many sites you can host on the same server.

Actually, I'm not that big of a fan of ASP.NET, but I do have clients who are. Or that have past application written in that format and don't want to pay me to rewrite it in RoR or PHP. So it would be nice to have.
And I've seen your many many rants about ASP, Windows and "M$" on this forum. You can spare me the screaming.
Honestly, Windows Server, IIS, and ASP.NET are tedious, picky, and expensive. I agree with your assessment that it isn't the best choice, but the fact that PHP and RoR run on Windows as well as ASP.NET makes it a lot more marketable for me to want a Windows box.
I'm happy with bluehost's service and reliability. :) I was just looking to see if anyone else thought it would be nice to have a dedicated Winbox.
I found out everyone's happy with linux boxes and the dedicated linux server would only serve those who wish to manage their own multiple domains.
Thanks to everyone who participated! :D

They run on windows but a lot of scripts wont work properly especially scripts which have to do with filesystem. Second RoR and PHP were made for Linux so therefore they are port for windows. Typically ports arent nearly as good. Also ASP is pointless there are no good qualities, everything that can be done in ASP and ASP.NET, you could do on PHP, including webservices.

Go check out Visual Studio 2008. This time M$ got it right ("$" - did you think Microsoft was some sort of charity?).. last I checked Bluehost wasn't free either.
The functonality you claim it lacks is there... The speed issues have been addressed and it is probably the most advanced web programming suite on the market. I will be leaving Bluehost after 4 years so I CAN post VS2008 projects. Bitch all you want about Microsoft and cost but if you are an IT professional you would be a member of MSDN and then you could get all the software you want. Even if you hate them, it's always good to keep pace with what is happening in the market place.
Microsoft VS2008 - ASP.NET (with Web 2.0) is as good, if not better that PHP. Check out what MS has to offer now... with an open mind.. and then get back to me about how MS sucks. If you still think MS sucks... then you will always think MS sucks just because you hate MS.
Oh yeah, and what was the name of Steve Job's charitable foundation to help cure aides, and build schools in the USA? That's right... there isn't one.
Bill Gates AT LEAST is taking some of the money and USING FOR GOOD in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation!!!!!! Who else does that? NO, I DO NOT WORK FOR MICROSOFT. Just tired of everyone beating up on MS based on past performance. Peace!

There is no way BlueHost would install Windows. Matt would need to hire all new staff to support those systems if they did since they are currently running Linux only and the current staff do not therefore have the necessary Windows expertise (you would'nt want a carpenter laying the bricks for your house would you?). Given Matt's dislike for Windows he'd be unlikely to accept the servers if they were given to him as a gift.
I believe that there was some mention on his blog some time back that he is investigating the possibility of dedicated Linux servers.

From the July 25th post on Matt's blog (http://mattheaton.com/), it looks like that's still many, many, many months off, following construction of a new data center - construction hasn't even begun yet.

I would jump into a Bluehost dedicated server if the price is okay. I'm even getting worried now about the future of my sites- can shared servers sustain them in about a year or so to come? As a site grows bigger due to traffic, it would be difficult to keep up with the allotted CPU quota on a shared Bluehost server. So personally, I may need a dedicated server in about a year or less. If Bluehost can arrange it, that would be a lot easier for me.

Going from shared to a ded box seems like a big jump for most, it would be nice if there were a few more plans with larger cpu quotas and other removed limitations between the standard shared hosting and a full dedicated server.

BH has plans to offer dedicated Linux servers, but it looks like it will be many, many months before they're available. No sense continuing this thread. Closed.
