View Full Version : What I see is not what I get

I'm using FrontPage 2000.
Whan I save my website in FrontPage, and "preview" it in Firefox and Internet Explorer, everthing looks fine.
But when I publish it to Bluehost, several things get changed.
An "includes" file that is supposed to display my website name in the header does not get included, being replaced by an empty box and a red x.
It is correct in FrontPage, and the proper "includes" file is in the directory on Bluehost.
(I tried to use the Page Banner" feature, so my website name "Camping and RVing" now appears on the home page, but not elsewhere.)
The theme "Global" on my navigation bars, which looks so nice on my desktop gets stripped out in the published version. The navigation bars revert to plain text.
My Table of Contents contains the Bluehost manual, WISIWIG, and error pages, even though I used Index Manager to turn off indexes.
I read the Bluehost Help File about turning off the "index" so I did that, and it worked only one time, then went back to dredging up everything.
When I went back to Index Manager, it won't show me anything except one folder, the name of which is identified only as "Current folder", so I can't get back to "public_html" or "index.htm".
Can anyone help?
Thanks
CJ

by publish to bluehost you mean that option within frontpage?
try using and FTP client to upload your files, all of them, and see if it solves the problem.
Frontpage isnt that great of a program, and it does a lot of stupid things in an attempt to act smart.
You did not mention, so I have to ask... Have you enabled the front page extensions on your account? I think you can do it through c-panel but if not I'm sure support can do it for you.

Yes, I believe I have enabled the FrontPage extensions, although I don't remember doing anything "major" to achieve that, other than just following instructions. Otherwise, I think nothing would have worked.
I'm using the "Publish Web" feature of FrontPage.
I know that a lot of people put down FrontPage, but a lot of people put down anything Microsoft, so what is to be believed?
I'm not new to computers, but new to programming, and even newer to web building, so I needed a little hand-holding. When I saw that a lot of people here use FrontPage, I decided to go ahead with it.

I started about 10 months ago pretty much where you are today, but with a little experience in casual programming (mostly VBA). I started with Front Page but quickly graduated to PHP programming, and am now headed toward ruby-on-rails.
Front Page worked ok for me as long as I kept things simple but there is Soooo much more available when you break into more hand coding.
BTW, just a thought... you may want to check / vs \ in the include file location spec if there is one. I would think FP and the extensions would deal with this, but you are dealing with windows file system in development and a unix box in production.

OK, thanks, Joe. That's helpful.
Yes, it does have an include file, and I will look. I remember hearing something about that slash business, but didn't realize it was something I needed to look at more closely.
Do you mean my include file should contain / rather than \ ?
(I'm not sure which you meant was correct.)
I decided to go ahead and try FrontPage, as it is a good way to get my content organized. I'll be that much ahead of the game if and when I go to another program.
I'll have to move to a different host, anyway, because Bluehost does not support ASP, which I will eventually need. I didn't know that before I signed up, of course.
Have you looked at Microsoft® Visual Web Developer™ 2005 Express Edition?
It's free to download and free to use forever for those who download it during this, its first year of release. (until November).
I've downloaded it and a couple of tutorials, and if it works for me, that's probably the way I'll go.
I had heard that they won't upgrade FrontPage again... maybe this is the reason why.
Thanks again.

file to test ssi located in public_html:
<html>
<head></head>
<body>
<h1>my include test</h1>
<!--#include file="test_files/test.txt" -->
<h1>That concludes the test</h1>
</body>
</html>
The test.txt file located in public_html/test_files (not \test_files):
<h1>This is the test file</h1>
Worked first time on bluehost with nothing in .htaccess
Just thought I'd try it.

www.campingandrving.comI switched over to Bluehost a few months back and also use FrontPage. Since following this advice I have not had any further problems. Believe me I was freaking out and already searching for a new host. Give this a try.
Bluehost support gave me some excellent advice.
1. Make sure your extensions are turned on
2. Do not use the publish feature ever. Simply open your FrontPage Program on your computer, open your website. Make any changes, additions, etc. and just save the page. It will then save the page to your website on their server.
3. Never open your site "live" using FrontPage. It has to be opened from FrontPage, NOT the other way around.
What problems are you still having? For problems with your table of contents, if you are using navigation (rather than categories) for the base, I believe you must make sure that the pages you do not wish to viewed on the website must not be included in your navigation pane.
The newsgroup at microsoft.public.frontpage.client (http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.frontpage.client?hl=en) is also a very good resource for information.
