Hello, all:

I am curious in creating and online address book. What I mean by this is a site where visitors may create an account, enter their contact information, and allow other account holders to view their info. Then, should a user's info change, they could easily change it live.

Basically, I'd like to create a place for friends from my past to get back in touch with each other.

I know there are sites that I could use such as Classmates.com or even MySpace, but I'd like to keep it condensed and more personal.

I'd appreciate anyone with any knowledge on how I'd approach this to pass along any information or tutorials. I appreciate any advice...

Thanks for your help!
Regards,

BJ

There are so many scripts that would let you run a site like this. I think almost every flavor of Nuke has an address book add-on that would let each member keep an online copy of an address. Nuke isn't the friendliest of CMS's, but it sure does work.

I think just about any of the scripts classified as "groupware" would let each person configure a personal address book. There's a cgi script that doesn't use MySQL but rather uses text files that has a "Web OFFICE" add-on that includes having your own address book. It's at http://www.web-app.org.

Best of luck!

I know you mentioned that you want something more personal then myspace or classmates, but what you mention sounds exactly like what plaxo.com already offers

Just a suggestion in case you don't really want to maintain something like this yourself.

I agree with Schelly, except that WebAPP developers and support team has moved to http://www.web-app.net over a year ago.

You can download the script from here: http://www.web-app.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=downloads&cat=currentwebappversion (no need to register.. just click and go!).

Here is a stand alone web based address book:

Looks like it has some good features.

Strange, it produces these errors:
Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you're unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

It looks like they use WordPress as the CMS for their site, and it's down right now. So maybe this one will work:
