Hey there,
got a couple of questions which hopefully will have some easy answers. I'm pretty new to all of this so please bare with me...
1. I currently have one site up and running - dirtycompany.co.uk. when this address is entered the address bar shows dirtycompany.co.uk/dirty. I want to use a different domain name for this site now - ad-venturecentre.co.uk. How can i transfer the site to this new domain?
2. I would still like to use dirtycompany.co.uk but will be building new pages for this. How can i set these two sites up to run independently of each other?
Should it make any difference to the solution(s), I am using Joomla for both sites.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Stu

Hi Stu,
Joomla is easy to configure to run from a new path/url so that's no problem. Just create your new domain to point to a new folder and, when that's complete, use your ftp program's "move" function to move all the Joomla files from the old domain to the new directory.
Then edit config.php with the new directory name in the paths and urls you find in that file. Be sure to edit in a true text editor and not Word or Wordpad. That really should do it, since the db is still hosted on the same box.

Hello Schelly,
thank you for your reply (&apologies for my very late one!)
I'm not too sure how this should be done - all rather new to this. which folders would i need to move exactly? Also, how do I get a domain to use a specific folder, i couldn't see anyway to do it? and finally, where is this config.php file? I can't find it anywhere!
thanks
Schelly

Hey Stu,
From what I understand of your description of your directory structure, here's what I believe:
Connect to your site via a good ftp program like WS-FTP
Browse to the /dirty folder
Highlight everything in the /dirty folder (files and folders)
Right-click the highlighted files and folders
Select "Move" from the context menu
Type in the new folder destination, i.e. /public_html/newfolder (substitute "newfolder" with the name of the new folder)
Click Ok.
Sometimes ftp programs "cache" the directory listing so it may look like files are left behind. Hit the "Refresh" button on your ftp program if this occurs and you should find that it has moved every file and folder to the new location.
Look in the root of that folder for configuration.php and make a backup copy, downloading it in ascii mode. Then, edit that file with a true text editor. Change the lines that used to point to the dirty folder so they now point to the correct one.
That should do it. If your new domain is active in the new folder, you should be able to browse to that domain and see your old site.

Hi Schelly,
thanks, i think i've got it now. I'm downloading the entire 'dirty' folder to my local machine just in case i go wrong (i trust this is ok to do?) but the FTP is running so slow today!
Cheers,

Hi Schelly
I krep seeing people asking variations of this question but have yet to see the answer I am looking for. Wondering if you can tell me.
I have one joomla based site in progress, and just added an add-on domain for which I also want to use Joomla along with an open source realty package and a joomla bridge.
I am assuming I need to install a new instance of Joomla in the add-on domain folder? Can you tell me if I am correct, and if Fantastico will let me do that and put it where I want it?
thanks
Lee

Lee, your assumptions are correct. You would have to install a new instance of Joomla. I just took a look at Joomla under Fantastico it does allow you to choose a specific domain.
