I emailed the following questions to support two days ago with no response, so hopefully some of the members can shed some light on this:

1. We have a few subdomains created under our main domain. Is it possible to change the MX record for the main domain "mydomain.com" while having emails destined to "subdomain.mydomaint.com" be delivered to Bluehost's mail server? Or once I change the MX record for "mydomain.com" all mail including those destined to "subdomain.mydomain.com" go to the location as set by the MX record for "mydomain.com"?

2. Can the MX record point to a host under the same domain hosted by bluehost where "host" is an A record in the bluehosts's DNS entry. For example, mydomain.com is hosted by Bluehost with an A record of "mailserver.mydomain.com". Can I then set the MX record for mydomain.com to "mailserver.mydomain.com" or does it have to be set to “mailserver.anotherdomain.com”?

I hope I've posed the questions clearly.

Thanks.[/SIZE]

So I post my question on the live chat and this is the response I get:

"Basically, let us know how you want the dns setup, and we will set it up for you".

Isn't it hilarious? :D

You can have the DNS setup they way you want it, but BH remains all control over the DNS.

I understand that, but that doesn't answer the basic question. That was my whole point regarding the "live chat" operator's response. It's like asking someone "How are you?", and getting the response "Let me know when and we'll do lunch".

Yeah I understand that. I guess try again.

As for number one, if you go to cPanel >> Email Manager >> Modify Mail Exchanger

There you can change the MX records for domains AND sub domains. Do number one should work. As for number 2, I'm not sure about that.

Ordinarily yes, each subdomain can have a different MX record provided each MX record points to an A record (CNAMEs are a no-no).

2. Can the MX record point to a host under the same domain hosted by bluehost where "host" is an A record in the bluehosts's DNS entry. Again, there should be no reason why not as long as BlueHost support is willing to make those changes for you. You could just ask them to change the NS records to point to some external service such as ZoneEdit and then edit your own DNS records to your heart's content. You would get much finer control over email aliases and such as well.

Thank you CodeMonkey. I guess I'll give that a try and see how it works.

I would have loved to gotten a response from BH supportt on the ticket I opened on this 3 days ago. Yes, I know I can call them, but I really don't have 2-3 hours to wait in the queue just to be disconnected when I become 2nd in line. This has happened to me at least 3 times in the past. Maybe BH should also take a good look at their ACD system. :)

I made the changes over the weekend and everything's working fine. Mails to our main domain are being delivered and sent from our exchange server while the mail for subdomains are handled by Bluehost. :)

Ironically, support emailed me today after 6 days and just said "yes we can do that for you". Thanks for nothing!
