I'd like to see a "new to bluehost" or "FAQ for beginners" or some such major thread that tell's all about bluehost, options, can and can't do, etc. Some elementary topics to publishing a website for beginners. I've been reading other webhosting forum's to get help and hints. But since i cannot see their file structure's from the "inside" so to speak it is very limiting in help with being on BH.
thanks!

I agree with carnna I came to the bluehost forum for help in resolving two issues on my own I could not resolve. One of the problems was installing a phplist, even though I clicked on the the email click to receive installation details I never received it. I needed help... but golly the responses I received were less then appropriate I thought...and amounted to "mine is working"
of course I am very happy for them...but these remarks did nothing to resolve the difficulties I am having.
Rando thank goodness requested addl info in which he could analyze the "what's wrong" with my "mail forwarding" problem which I sent him.
However If I had a page I could have gone to for installation details on setting up the phplist it would have been more helpful then having posted to this forum.

http://helpdesk.bluehost.com/help <- this would be "FAQ for beginners" and should be looked over before you come posting here asking other bluehost customers what to do about something.

Basil just where do you see anything in Carnna posting asking other bluehost customers for help. If I read this posting correctly she was making a suggestion.

All I'm saying is, why would we need an FAQ section on the forum if there is already information of that nature on the help desk..

I see you have not been there. it is "bare bones" only.

Unfortunately, we don't currently have anything in the knowledge base regarding "A Beginner's Guide to Creating Webpages" but in all honesty, the BEST resource and your BEST friend while learning anything new will be google.com
I started learning Flash, Photoshop, and C++ a few years ago, I did have a book for each but my best resource was either developer forums or a search engine, you can find exactly what information you need. Even when I first learned notepad HTML, google was my companion.
If you have any questions, we will certainly do our best to answer, posting a few here will return some answers to you as well. The beautiful thing about the internet is the vast amount of knowledge that can be shared amonst people.
In the meanwhile, I will try to start working on some knowledge base information for people beginning a new website.

I like the idea of including these kind of forums because they will provide basic answers to common questions right here in the user forums. Wouldn’t it be better if there were more ways to help people? This kind of basic help is absent with this forum but it is included in competitors forums. The suggestions that carnna made were excellent. More convenient avenues of helping newcomers is always a good suggestion. Anyway, that’s what www.bluehostforum.com is all about. BH customers should be able to find answers here AND in the help center. Even the answer to "where can I find more help?" should be found here. I would also suggest an orientation of sorts as well, something to help confirm that the newcomer made a good choice with BH.

I'm thinking about writing a FAQ for the forum. Then when someone comes up with a "new common" question I can add it to the list. :)

The suggestions in this thread make me think a wiki would be more suitable than a forum thread. For simple questions, a faq thread can work. For questions that are better answered with a howto, a wiki is far better. Each has strengths and weaknesses that complement each other. Something to run by the bluehost folks...?

Oh well...hmm I didn't mean like a thread for FAQ, I meant above (between User CP and Member List)
A wiki would be a good idea too.
Good suggestions. :D

A public bluehost wiki is on our list somewhere.

LOL I like the "SOMEWHERE".
It's actually on my todo list, but is sadly not near the top. That honored spot is filled with things like keep the servers online, setup and installation of Ruby on Rails (done), come up with even better methods of mysql backups, better methods of DDoS blocking, etc, etc.
A wiki will probably happen with the hire of anouther admin (yes, it's posted) as mentioned in Matt's blog. Beleive it or not, the new guy (whomever he may be) already has a list almost as long as mine. :)

Let's hope he's as dedicated as you guys and keeps up BlueHost's good reputation. :p

Until the wiki happens, more segmentation of the threads and links in those threads to the help desk system would be really useful.

Thanks for saying that...you gave me an idea. I'll do it once I'm back to work from my two classes. :p

Hi All,
Is Phplist the only mailing list option available to bluehost clients. I am looking for one that would hadle up to 100,000 emails and would welcome advice (including phplist) from experienced users.
Thanks

We as a community could start writing posts and have a moderator like yourself make it a sticky.
Wouldn't mind being a moderator myself :D
