I was looking at my stats today and it was far more interesting since it was the first of the month. Everything I was looking at was for today, not cumulative for the month.

What tools are you all using to evaluate your logs? Do they let you look at one day at a time?

I am particularly interested in seeing what search engine keywords people used to land on my site. Again, that was really interesting today because they were searches that were done today.

I've been using Awstats mostly. A little confused at the discrepancy between it and Webalizer.

Any input appreciated.

Google Analytics

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a very simple and powerful solution called Google Analytics. You can sign up at http://www.google.com/analytics for free. You will need to copy and paste two lines of Google code into the header of every page you want to track. It tracks user information that Awstats does not track, such as user navigation (entry and exit points and click path), returning users, as well as user info such as browser, platform, connection speed, screen resolution, colors, Java, Flash. I've used it since Nov 1 and am happy. There are a few issues that Google is trying to address (see my blog for a discussion).

Above is from BH thread. Google Analytics tracks each search engine and keywords as well as phrases, and then provides other useful info for each searcher.

does adding external stats like google or statcounter slows down websites?

You literally add two lines of HTML code to each page you wish to track with Google Analytics. It should not affect page load speeds, And even if Google pings your site once an hour, that again should have no effect on server load. I have used the Google Analytics package for 3 months and have been very satisfied. It provides much more than Awstats or Webalyzer. And the graphics (e.g. site click through map, global map of visitors, daily/weekly/montly trend lines, etc.) are very helpful.

There is no comparison between statcounter and google analytics. Google analytics provides a far superior feature set (including being able to see how users enter, navigate and leave your site, manage different campaigns and set campain goals - e.g. I have a banner ad campaign on another site and I can track users that come into my site from that banner ad all the way through the shopping cart and checkout, and so on). And all of this for free with free tech support and user forums!!!
