Im trying to CHMOD 444 a file, and after I do that and refresh the view, it shows 644....


Anybody encountered this problem before?

Yes. That has happened to me. 644 should be fine

No, 644 is not fine. Software Im using wont log me on until two files are 444...

Are you trying to chmod from an ftp client or from cPanel File Manager?
You should be able to chmod 444 from file manager.

Or from your SSH login.
