Officially, bluehost does not support voice comm programs. This means we do not support the install or the troubleshooting. Our support articles for ventrilo and teamspeak are located here:
teamspeak - http://helpdesk.bluehost.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=320
ventrilo - http://helpdesk.bluehost.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=321
Teamspeak and ventrilo will work, we simply do not support them. Please refer to the above articles, as they really do contain the necessary info to get them running.

If you don't know, then you don't need to worry about it. BH does not support them.

Thanks for writing those articles. Although they don't support them (why would they are third party) it is a big help. It seems so easy just 4 or 5 commands and your done. LINUX FTW

Voice communications software like Ventrillo or team speak are used for games a lot. For instance I play battlefield 2142 and using Ventrillo were team speak. You are able to communicate with your whole team and give tactical information instantly through a VOIP communication software program. Just Google Ventrillo or team speak to find out more.

only problem is vent costs lots of money and TS is free.
They are both the same thing. And do the same thing (VoIP) just as well.
It really is just personal preference and what ur guild uses.

I like teamspeak because it is free but they dropped the ball big time by not adding in a way to adjust individual peoples volume. They say it adjusts itself automatically but that is just not the case. In raids I always have one guy that sounds like he is talking 100x louder than everyone. Due to this we pay another host for Vent.

You could just tell him to turn his output volume down.

To install Teamspeak, you need Root level SSH access, that is not available on shared hosting servers, also, a VPS or full dedicated server is required if you want to use this program for more then 5 - 10 users.
It wil kill a Shared server due to the very low limit of CPU, Memory and other resource allowences.

Wow, that's completely wrong
You can get shell access by sending your driver's license photo to BlueHost and telling them that you want shell access ... and Yes it is available on regular shared hosting servers.
Shell access is not "required" but it will make starting the server easier ... though you can also just use a cron script to do it.
The dedicated IP is needed in the TS config file to bind the process ... otherwise the systems utilities will turn it off in about 5 minutes because it's shared hosting.
I'm not sure what the max number of users is but I've had 15 or 16 with no problem and I believe one of the admins here said they had 60. TeamSpeak is very CPU friendly and runs just fine here on BlueHost and I've been running it here for the last 9 months or so on a shared account and have no complaints at all. In fact it more than pays for itself just in long distance savings.
I've had a 50 slot running for over two years, with almost zero problems. I have to restart every once in a will, but a cron job will take care of that.
It's very CPU friendly.

Well, since when it first starts it creates a file with the process ID in it (whatever file in that directory with a .pid extension), you could write a small bash script that grep's what's in that file against your current running processes. If the results come back negative, restart the server and send you an email.
Have it run once every 15 minutes.

I wondered how much of a pain it would be to uninstall Teamspeak from Bluehost? Would this also require telnet access?
Thanks to Bluehost as well as each and all of you that keep this forum afloat.
So glad I made the leap,
Jerry :D

I'm not sure what you mean by "uninstall" but you can kill the TS process from CPanel then delete the files with the file manager if you just want to get rid of it and avoid using SSH :)

Though not supported by bluehost officially...
To set up Teamspeak I'd suggest reading here: http://bluehostforums.com/showthread.php?t=399
I had absolutely no clue how. Post on page 3 thoroughly goes through what to do to set it up. Pretty simple once you figure it out.
The cronjob for it, in that topic though, didn't help at all. For setting a script / cronjob to check if the server is down and restart it if so I'd suggest reading here: http://forum.teamspeak.com/showthread.php?t=19705
I set this up today, and still have some kinks to work out/things to figure out yet. Happy talkin' ;)

FYI, the new version of ventrilo does not work on bluehost even if you have a dedicated ip address.

What do you think the max amount of users a BH package can run on Vent?

Has anyone successfully got Vent 3.0.2 working as of yet? I know Bluehost doesn't officially support VoIP apps, and I've seen plenty of the posts as the one above...just didn't know if a member of the tech crew has verified that Vent 3.0.2 will not run on Bluehost even with a dedicated IP or if anyone has managed to get it running.
Thanks!

This user is pretty much spot on, For a short time I ran 2 1000man teamspeak serves off my bluehost account with next to no issue.
Team speak is fairly good about cpu/mem useage. While I dident have access to cpu stats on BH on my new host I average about 300 users on one of the teamspeaks at any given time and its happy coasting along at 7% cpu ultiz.

Any word on this? I was just thinking about setting one of these up but if Team Speak or Ventrilo in the latest version won't work then I may have another issue.
