I really don't care what kind of crap fills up the offtopic forum as long as it's not the completely pointless kind of crap.
You mean like the "add a line to the story" thread & the "what's your sign" thread. In other words you do want techies in here not yackers/people having fun. Isn't that what you meant by this: "Postcount really doesn't mean much."?
I think I'll take my yacking butt on & leave this forum to the techs/helpful guys. Good luck. ;)
Alright so mines http://projekthosting.net  still needs work

It sounds to me like BH may be getting in over their heads with support tickets over so called "simple matters" and by starting this forum they are hoping users can help other users with these problems and relieve some of the load.
I like the idea but I believe this isn't going to happen without the completely pointless talk around the water cooler. That's how relationships built, and trust is established. People need time to be established and it saddens me that the completely pointless crap is not welcome here.
Also, by just recently opening the forum community, they should want to foster open discussion and customer involvement regarding the forum itself. That way it quickly molds itself around the personality of its users. Giving the early community members that sense of involvment which creates the bond.

jamisonlikewhat.com, my mp3 blog.
Our formal mission statement, such as it is, is that every artist deserves equal and due critical consideration, so long as their music is interesting in some way. jamisonlikewhat.com is place where you can come to hear a unique perspective on today’s best music– whether it be a mainstream radio hit, Nelly’s latest slow jam, or the most indie of the indies, anything and everything deemed worthy is given a chance to shine.
How it works, basically, is that I’ll hear a song that I like, I’ll write about why I like it, and I’ll post the song for download so that you can like it, too. I hope to update daily, though actual results may vary. First and foremost, you should know, this is a place for me to practice my writing– what this means to you is that I’ll be musing on whatever subject or artist I choose, irregardless of timeliness or good sense.
That said, enjoy the music, share it with your friends, and respond to write-up’s– jamisonlikewhat is an mp3 blog for fans of music, by a fan of music.

From there you can get to my wife's site (http://kami.bsan.org), and our games site (http://games.bsan.org). At our games site we feature a couple of puzzle/riddle games (notpron, riddla, riddler, etc.) that we've made.

www.aircraftspotting.net for my hobby.
I'm really diggin' this site here. Great stuff. Reminds of what me and my Dad used to do growing up. He used to work for McDonnell Douglas (which was right next to the airport) here, and he used to take me, my brother, and sister out there to watch the planes come in and take off. He would take us out for ice cream if we could correctly identify at least 2 incoming planes each. Even if we all couldn't correctly name everything coming in he'd still take us out for ice cream anyway. :D
I live along one of the major flight paths here and can see a lot of incoming planes really well. We have all kinds of air traffic here, sometimes you never know what you're going to see.
Okay, I'll stop now. :D

I just bought hosting from bluehost today, and moved from another server that is having some difficulty hosting IPB. I uploaded it, ran GREAT for about an hour, and timed out.
I called tech support, and they told me I was on the problem child server, and quickly went to fix it. The customer service is great.
Anyway, my site is nothing special, it is about books, politics and general chit chat. I wanted an unmoderated forums, but the server AUP would not allow it.

Though I often click the links in forum signatures, I like the idea of a concentrated place to spotlight everyone's efforts (and to pimp my own little thing). Anyway, I only know fairly basic (and probably outdated) HTML and I put together the basic structure of my site on paper then notepad years ago. It has slowly evolved over time with the occasional use of Adobe GoLive4 so I can be lazy with image gallery building and rollovers.
My site (impactnoise.net (http://impactnoise.net)) is built as a sort of online portfolio of various art things that I do. I've had the same basic structure for it for about seven to eight years and I'm ALMOST ready to brush up and make something new.
My fiancee's has a subdomain on my bluehost thing here: crackedmoon.impactnoise.net (http://crackedmoon.impactnoise.net/) A bit in-process at the moment but workable. Built completely by her. She is much more of a notepad freak than I.

I think that the navigation needs to be tweaked in some places but I'm sure that others have some great suggestions that I would definitely appreciate.
I think it flows pretty well...what did you use to create your site? Mine is very bland and overall just kinda blah...lookin for ways to spice it up!

Hi, Forum readers,
Before yesterday I use to host my own web site called Stuff on my desk (http://www.stuffonmydesk.com), but that all changed on Friday when my site was reviewed by TGCom (http://www.tgcom.mediaset.it/tgtech/articoli/articolo311432.shtml), an Italian news site.
My poor little linux server didn't know what hit it. By lunch time on Friday I had received over 30 000 page views, my site almost collapsed from the sheer volume of visitors.
So it became necessary for me to find an alternate hosting solution and BlueHost were my first choice after reading such wonderful reviews. As you will all know joining their service is dead easy and I was up and running in an hour or so. I've got nothing bad to say about BlueHost, their support has been incredible.
Anyway about my site; www.StuffonmyDesk.com (http://www.stuffonmydesk.com) - Your desk is a statement about you. Send us a photo of your desk and we will show it off to the world. We will categorise it according to its style (mess, clutter, dirt, uniqueness, wow factor) and visitors can vote for the best desk.
Cheers,
Mike ;)

We have three sites up at BH.
One is our marketing strategy consulting firm Exchange Synergism (http://www.exchangesynergism.com), which is a plain old MS Frontpage site.
The second is a marketing analytics consultancy Objective Business Services (http://www.objectivebusiness.com) built with PHPWebsite, which I think gives nice clean results. The only issue I've hit with PHPWS is the need to implement mod-rewrite as a modification so that it will be indexed by search engines.
The third, and most ambitious of our efforts is the Marketing Strategy Canada Forum Project (http://www.mscforum.com) which is a PHP Bulletin Board augmented with a Knowledge Base for articles and a Resource Directory for links.
If you are interested in Canadian marketing, please slide over to the Forum and register. We'd love to hear from you.

At 50 years old, I can't call myself new. :D
I saw this post about looking at other people's sites and well ...
I don't mind if you all look at my site. AVenuesPlus.com
It's a site for advertisers that looks like a pixel ad site, kind of, but isn't a pixel ad site. And it's much cheaper.
It capitalizes on the virtual nature of a web page to be more than what pixel ad sites are. Plus the site is multi-media capable and can do online commercials and infomercials.
Too new to have any subscribers yet.
Go to the SignPost Venue and play with the Style Control and Select Criteria Controls to get a good idea what the site's potentials are. Also check out the Compare Pricing! link on the home page to get a bottom line on how much cheaper a Venue ad is than a pixel ad.
I wish I had a video sample, but sorry -not yet. :(
90 days to get picked up by the major search engines?
Yahoo and Google have picked me up, but only for my title keywords, AVeneusPlus or AVenue+.
Oddly enough, Yahoo finds me for Bakersfield Million Dollar Home. Realtors oughtta love that.
Anyway, have a nice weekend folks. From the 'old' new kid on the forum.

I didn't have any problems for it loading for me (though it did take a bit of time for it to load), I will agree it needs to be trimmed up some. Some of the content was overlapping other content and couldn't be read. Could be a Firefox issue, but that's the only browser I'll use now.

Thanks! It's the java script menu. We went with the java menu so people couldn't print out the menu. Broadband is very big here in Palm Coast so most people use this and don't have as long of a download time. Maybe I should look into another alternative? Any suggestions for menus?:D

No. I've seen this one other time on someones else's PC. The text font size may be set to large. I don't know how to overcome this as I build the pages with a medium font w/120 resolution for the screen. I have improved it alot with a text editor but I just can't control how some browsers view it.
How do you build yours to be compatible w/ most browsers?
dvessel
06-05-2006, 05:12 PM
Broadband is pretty big everywhere. I get about 6Mb consistent connection. :)
And what do you mean you didn't want the menu printed? This could be done with print.css styles. I don't know the specifics but do a google search for "print media css style" and you'll find it. From there just give the menu a class and set the display to 'none'. It only takes over when the page is printed.
What I do to get fairly consistent font sizes is to set the body font size in a style sheet to 62.5% and then set the font sizes everywhere else relative to that in em's. 1em is roughly equal to 10px but it's still scaleable. example: 1.2em = 12px, give/take..
CSS is the way to go. :) good luck.

How do you build yours to be compatible w/ most browsers?
Well, I use Wordpress so I didn't build everything. The layout and theme that I use is based off of another Wordpress theme that I did quite a bit of tweaking to.
The way I made my site compatible with most browsers took a lot of tweaking around with the div tags mostly, and goofing about with the CSS file. I also threw in an IE hack or 2 to force it to be compatible with IE. When I first put my site up it would work well in Firefox, but look like crap in IE. I would correct it for IE and then it would look like crap in Firefox. It took a lot of stumbling around and learning how to adjust my CSS file correctly so that things would line up correctly for most browsers.
In a nutshell - what dvessel said, CSS is the way to go. :)

I had a look at your jcsdesign.com website and it's appealing. I was drawn to the translations and tested the German (my mother tongue is German) one and the Japanese one. This automatic translations are quite awful and the translated text doesn't make a lot of sense.

Do you actually know who owns the site? Not the hosting company, I mean the person running that site? Could be something they did, or didn't do depending on the circumstances. Not sure what to tell you. The site could be down due to a myriad of reasons from bad CSS code (my guess), database issues, or simple routine maintenance. Sorry, kind of hard to base anything based off of a site simply not loading and very minimal source code on their end.

I am new to bluehost, just transferred my site to them from the previous hostgator(after 1 year - due to port blocking) and vistapages (after only 3 weeks due to very mediocre servers resulting in database errors on the site), now I hope to stay with this host, it depends on the quality of the service of course.
Anyway, this is my site www.t5kclan.com, an unreal tournament 2004 gaming clan, it is based on php-nuke, but entirely designed and created by me, It took me 4 months to do all those flash files, all the theme panelling and the entire design and features like the shoutbox/intro, the monthly pictures, navigation, banner, clock etc... I still need to change the game server module because on IE ( due to previous microsoft windows update ) are not showing anymore. The java workaround for the flash files and media files does not work with the gameserver module. In other browsers all is working.

I am not really into clan sites, although I do like the way they are put together, however you have set a new bench mark for me when viewing other clan sites, It was worth the 4 months of coding, very clean, professional, I want one just like that ;) well done, bring on the web awards.

Well, my site is fairly new and I've been hosting on GD (don't know if I should hide the identity of my previous hosting provider or not). I've been with GD for a while for various personal and pet project sites. MicrowaveCam.com (http://MicrowaveCam.com) was recently featured on Yahoo's THE 9. http://the9.yahoo.com/2006/10/04/ Well, the publicity totally overwhelmed my site and I did receive a handful of "hey your site is too slow" e-mails. I'm hoping BH is a better, more robust hosting provider. BH has much more of a community feel and I don't feel like "just a number." Well, have fun checking out my site. I hope it brings some smiles to your faces!

not bad for 55 bucks. I wont need it now but in the future it could be helpful. Anyways seriously good product. That has always been the biggest problem with interpreted languges. They are not protected because people can easily see the source code. Seriously not a bad product and nice site. I wish you luck in the futre.
I like the demo capibilities. Finnally shareware for PHP. That has always been an issue with PHP is that there are never any paid scripts because it is hard to protect. Another issue is copyrights and people takking copyrights out of the code. Anyways i wont need it cause i do open source projects.

http://www.phprocket.com
My site is about freelancing. I currently help people install scripts, design their web pages, help with banner design and alot more. I have been so busy helping others I never really had a chance to launch my site yet.
I am also looking to trade links, so if you have a site that is either freelance or some type of web related site, I would like to trade links with you..
Don't forgot to surf my site and checkout the little green men I made, I am really proud of them.. :D
Thanks.

The main site I host with bluehost is the vB based forum
http://forum.classicamiga.com
Which is part of the main http://www.classicamiga.com site, but the main site is not hosted with bluehost itself.
classicamiga.com itself is dedicated to the classic range of Commodore Amiga computers and it's eventual goal is to collect together the largest single resource of all information related to the Amiga.
You may ask why I am hosting the main site and forum with different hosting companies. I had the main site's hosting setup before I needed to move my forums to a new host. It was then that I found bluehost and thought the bandwidth and database size allowed was perfect for running a forum.
Also having the main site and forum hosted on completely different servers means if one goes offline the other will most likely still be running so members can still get access to find out what is happening and be kept up to date.

I have a bunch of different clients now that are "blue-hosted" but one site of my own that might be helpful to somebody someday.
QuitKeepers.com (http://www.quitkeepers.com) is a site for people who have decided to give up tobacco and live smoke-free and tobacco-free. Mostly geared toward those with longer-term quits, QuitKeepers.com (http://www.quitkeepers.com) encourages "off topic" and irreverant styles. We laugh a lot and we play.
While other sites are great for "triage" for the newly quit, QuitKeepers.com (http://www.quitkeepers.com) takes the approach that the busier you are doing fun stuff, the less you'll think about smoking. No fees, no quit methods encouraged or discouraged, no lie. We're just hanging out, keeping our Quits together.

http://www.VeldmanFamily.com
A simple structured website with links to family member pages, stories and pictures. Because of the very large size of the family in three countries (Holland, Canada and USA) there literally are hundreds of pages and thousands of pictures.
I hope to add:
Family forum
Photo gallery (so they can upload pictures themselves)
Sign up for special events including paying on line, needed for a 2008 reunion (The last one was five days long and attended by 220 people from 4 countries).
Next step is to switch to asp.net
Currently, I have a fantasy art / resource site here on bluehost.
http://fantasyrealmcreations.com
I still have alot of work to do filling up my store and finishing my pages. So far so good! I'll be moving my pet portrait/animal art website to bluehost in the Fall and will be opening up an online play by post RPG at some point.

My latest project is an online dictionary of great quotations. There is a "mail-a-quote" feature which you can use to send a quote that is funny, or suggestive, or just appropriate somehow, to your friends. It's also a good writer's tool and a source for quotes that you can use in emails and forum signatures. Check it out at

I am an attorney in Chicago that represents medium size business in whatever ails them. I did the website in December using a new macbook and iWeb that came with it, essentially in a day or two (not counting minor revisions) just screwing around with the program, no professional training whatsoever.
Thanks to BH forum for how-to on the favicon. The interesting thing (to me, anyway) is that at my old firm it took over six months to get a "professional" web designer to put together what is essentially the same kind of site, albeit for ten lawyers not one. But here's the good part: they still don't have the ability to let viewers download articles, whereas I do on my "publications" page, it really wasn't that difficult to do.

I love things like this! I find the results on threads like this to be far more interesting than the stuff Google puts out.
Ok, 80s Nostalgia.com (http://www.80snostalgia.com) is my first one. I initially moved my site here after the UK company that had hosted it for the previous 6 years told me that they could no longer handle the traffic.
So I moved to hostmerit, who "accidentally" lost it in their server upgrade last year, then to another company whose name I have forgotten who asked me to move it for a refund. So I ended up here, and I think it's great.
Also, I'm about to start work on OfficeWar.co.uk (http://www.officewar.co.uk) - how to use common office implements to injure work colleagues.
And in the near future a magic tutorial site, provisionally called MishMashMagic.com, where you will be able to download PDF and AVI tutorials of conjouring and mindreading techniques.

Think Theory (http://www.think-theory.com/) - My site I started up not too long ago. I was hesitant at first, but I'm glad I went through with it. It's starting to finally grow and I've got a great staff getting together. Basically, we post about all sorts of topics. Whatever the writers feel like discussing, as long as it's a decent issue. It's still being worked on a lot to get the look and functionality the way we want it, but it's getting there.
Think Theory Forum (http://www.think-theory.com/forum/) - This is actually the reason I started the site -- just to have a forum. However, many members wanted to do more, so that's why the actual site is being put to use now too.
