View Full Version : Where to begin the build-up of WP?

Okay, new to the hosted version of WP and to BH as well.

I installed WP using Fantastico, and also FTP'd the WP theme I want to use. But now, for the life of me, I can't see where to start building my blog-site.

I've scoured my control panel.....and the only thing that looks remotely promising is the Page Wizard...tried that but couldn't find any path to my WP stuff or the theme template I want to start with.......

So, if my whole site will be built around a WP blog, what the heck do I do to even be able to start working on it?? Where do I go? What do I open?

I've only worked with wysiwyg (CoffeCup) before, so just trying to adapt to a whole new interface here...and having some issues

Thanks in advance for helping me stick my toes in the water......

You use the administrator functions within the WP that you have installed on your site itself. There is nothing in cpanel to take you there, you have to go to your site and select the admin function from there.

okay, so....my domain is in the transfer-over process from godaddy. Do I need to wait until that's complete??

The wp-admin link I got when I uploaded WP just gives me an error code (page not found)....the only WP Admin item I have is a folder on the BH side of my FTP record. Is there anything in there that would allow me to get started?

If I'm just waiting for a domain transfer, not sure if that's what's keeping me from getting at what I need to start working on the site......not publish yet, obviously, but just to start building....

Or must I wait for the transfer? I won't be uploading any of my current site, btw....don't want any of it....starting fresh with WP.......

Yes, you will have to wait until your domain transfers. The only way to get into your WP control panel is if your site is up and running.

"up and running".....you mean 'up and running' on Bluehost??

Because the WPBlog IS going to be the site........

In my noob brain, it's a chicken-or-the-egg conundrum. I can't work with WP until I have a 'site'....but WP is needed to MAKE my site......

Until the transfer is complete and you are able to see your site in a browser you will not be able to do anything with the site in WP as far as I know, though I am pretty much a noob myself. Maybe someone else has other info that I do not have, but I believe this is the way it works. I am waiting for my domain to transfer as well. There is no way I can access the WP control panel until the transfer is complete.

If you have WP loaded to the server via Bluehost's control panel for your site it will be there ready for you when the site transfers, and then you can tweak everything to your liking and needs.

Thanks CJB,

I guess my confusion is in part due to the fact that my site IS already online, but still over at GoDaddy......guess I'll wait til the transfer happens and then see if I can make some progress......

I suppose there's nothing I can do with the site thru godaddy as far as WP......since I don't have WP thru godaddy..........

Ah, I see! Having been more familiar with HTML or CSS based sites until fairly recently it was a difficult thing for me to fathom that I couldn't do much "behind the scenes" in preparation for WP. It's much like putting on a suit and having the tailor alter it while you still have it on...but it's really quick and easy and fairly painless (I had WP on my site not too long before I decided to transfer my domain to Bluehost from another host, so I got to play around with a bit).

I hope your transfer and WP experience goes smoothly. Have a good one.

last weekend i setup wordpress on my new bluehost plan.
basically:
1. upload wordpress files to server.
2. create new database.
3. change the wp-config
4. go to the wordpress folder, and installation guide will start. 2-3 more steps and its done.

Charles, thanks for the info. Unfortunately, my level of knowledge with creating databases and changing (change 'how'?) config files is a bit lacking.
Not something I could do......hopefully once the transfer is complete, all things will become clear........

Krakatoa,
Have you ever read the manual on installing WP?
http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

I was an absolute newbie to this as well when I installed WP and it took me just an evening to install it including first plugins and a different first theme from the net.

Thanks, Ferdinand. I will check that out right now. I don't know why I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around how this works....I've had websites in the past and made transfers...the difference is that this time I don't want to just transfer the existing program, I want to replace everything on it......

That's what I'm having trouble with....once the domain is active on bluehost, I just don't know what to do next....I'm not going to upload any of the files associated with the site as it is now (hosted at godaddy), so what am I going to be looking at when the transfer is complete??

I'm a basic website maker - and use paint-by-numbers stuff like CoffeeCup software (wysiwyg, drag-n-drop easy stuff).....so without a TEMPLATE to work on, I'm just not certain how it's going to look, from a "workspace" standpoint, once the domain is transferred.

I'm going to go read that doc now.....hopefully clarify things a bit.....I know it can't be that difficult, just having never done it this way before.......

I have already uploaded the wordpress files and the theme I want to use......

It was my assumption that installing WP with bluehost was a sort of one-click operation......so I'm assuming once my domain comes over, I'll just be able to start working......is that a correct assumption?
