I run a linux server and sometimes notifications need to be sent to my email address (service failures, warnings, etc). Problem is my ISP blocks port 25 (SMTP). I'm not sure what I'm asking, but can I configure email to use bluehost's servers or something? Changing my ISP is not an option.

guess your best option is to use BH webmail insteed. :)

For outgoing mail to the BH SMTP servers, you can use port 26 instead of port 25.

suprisingly a lot of ISPs block SMTP port 25 becasue every ISP provides email services to their customers. Therefore they basically want you only to send email through their server. Kind of stupid.

Kind of stupid. Not stupid. It prevents their networks from being used by spammers who set up their own mail servers, and hook them to the ISP's network. By forcing outgoing mail through their own SMTP server, they can control the rate and volume of outgoing email, which stops the spammers. If all ISPs would block port 25, the volume of spam would drop by quite a bit.

Concur, user port 26 to get around it.

Hi,

I have my bluehost email set up just fine on my computer. When trying to set it up for an employee on his mac the smtp server will not be recognized.

I'm aware of switching the port to 26 instead of 25 but is there a way to do that in the account creation process?

this is very frustrating.

thanks
