Is anyone else having issues with spammers posting to your Wordpress blogs ?

I'm getting over 100 a day easily. I have blacklists set up and that didnt seem to help much. I've had to resort to moderating comments for lack of a better idea.

Any suggestions out there ?

Thanks,
Michael

You are probably getting trackback spam. It has been an increasing issue lately, especially with wordpress, as the trackback stuff doesn't send anything through the spam filters.

There are methods of blocking it using mods that will make .htaccessrules to not allow direct connections to the trackback part of the programs (something that shouldn't be done anyway, I am told). One of my guys is starting a knowledgebase article on it, but it may be some time before he is done with it. In the meantime, you can search for wp-trackback.php on the web and there will be several people with their versions of blocking this issue.

I have found that simply disabling trackbacks is the path of least resistance. It's not used that much anymore, anyway, due to the spam issue.

I played that game with MovableType back in the day, then Drupal. There are all sorts of traps for the trackback spam, but in the end I turned off trackbacks... and I used to allow anonymous comments, but that too was a problem. So people have to login now.

It just became too tiresome.

Comment spam can be easily handled with the Akismet plugin.

Just setup a free account at http://www.wordpress.com (this is needed to get an API key for Akismet). Install the Akismet plugin from http://www.akismet.com , activate it - et voilą... comment spam is history.

For me Akismet has caught over 3000 spam comments (in two blogs over a period of 75 days!). From these 3000 only two comments slipped through. And there's only one false positive to report. So I think this is a very good result.
