Hi folks
I'd really appreciate some feedback on a couple of queries I have before I sign up.
I'm a Mac user and have used iWeb to create a web site and exported it to a local folder – Once I've created my account can I just ftp the whole folder into my root folder?
The site will host a small quantity of large machinma movie files, wmv, avi & mov for people to download or stream if they wish. I was just wondering how heavy that was on CPU time and bandwidth?
Can I password protect the site to only allow invited people access?
Sorry if the above is a bit vague, I hope you get the idea of what I"m asking and can help.
BTW, none of the movies will be copyright or "unsuitable". It's just an extension of a lo-res machinma movie site, nothing untoward:)
Thanks in advance

You should have no problem FTPing your stuff to your BH web space, and it's a simple matter to password-protect a directory.
Having people access existing files will create almost no CPU time demands at all - folks run into CPU trouble when they've got non-static pages, pages that access databases, and so on.
The download bandwidth provided by BH is huge, 3000Gb per month. You can do the math to figure out how many people could download a given file size (like 1000 people viewing a 100Mb file every day of the month).

from all the concern listed, dont see any problem.
the server performance is good, and the small stream wont put any load to it.
password protected folder can be setup.

Many thanks for the responses. I was particularly concerned about CPU usage, but you've put my fears to bed.
I'll be signing up in the next couple of days and, hopefully, I won't be bothering anyone with too many stupid questions (who am I kidding :D )

Just one thing to keep in mind. It may not be a problem for you, but BH is now throttling individual connections, limiting the download speed to 1 megabit per second (that's megabit, not megebyte). If your videos require a faster connection to be watchable, that could be a problem.

Thanks for the info. If my maths are right that makes a 100Mb film downloaded in 12 to 13 minutes. Just time for a cuppa :)
I think most of the people who use the site will download to view at leisure. I will certainly have a download button prominently displayed.
Thanks again

As other regulars here stated your requirements sound as if they are not going to cause a problem. If your site becomes very popular and you get 10+ users trying to stream files you may run into problems but that doesn´t happen over night.
Oh and make sure those files are not pornographic or violate the TOS in any other way ;)
