Hello everyone,
im launching a website that relies heavily on php and mysql, with an average of maybe 3 or 4 sql queries to the database per page. i intend the website to have at least between 10k to 100k page views per day. now, will bluehost (shared hosting) support this kind of load? im asking this, because i heard that the maximum allowed is 20 queries to the database at a given time, is this true? also, would i have a problem with the CPU quote being exceeded?
thanks in advance

20 queries that take longer than 1 second to execute. If you have your scripts optimized you will be fine at Bluehost (http://www.bluehost.com/track/signup/f).

than i guess that would depend on the database size?
what if, the queries DO take more than 1 second to execute? (due to the database being big, much server load at that moment) will it just get killed? is there a way around it?

The size of the database isn't that important, a properly indexed table will still load fast. Just keep track of your slow queries log and optimize as needed and your database shouldn't be a problem.
If the queries take too long you will probably exceed either your CPU limit or concurrent process limit, either way your site will be down for a few moments.

fact is that... 100k pageview per day is too much.
you will need vps or dedicated server.

thats what i didnt want to hear :( well, according to your own experience, what is the average "cap"(in page views with this kind of load) to make the move to vps or dedicate hosting absolutely necessary? 50k? 80k? 100k?

i suggest that 100k per month is ok for shared hosting plan at here.
and assume that its not script/sql intensive. for example a forum, or even a image gallery.
meaning a daily pageview of 3k + -. Or maybe 5k max.
above this.. will be time to go for vps. will cost $30-40 per month.
if your site hitting 100k per day,and 3 millions pageview per month.
you will need to choose at least a mid range dedicated server with at least 20mbits uplink. 100mbits is recommended for such traffic. And with at least 1GB ram. I estimate the alexa ranking will be within 10k in ranking. Huge traffic.

There is only one real way to know if you need a VPS or dedicated server: try it. If you're willing to see if you absolutely need it you can sign up for shared hosting and give it a go, if it doesn't work bluehost gives pro-rated refunds.
You should also ensure that everything is optimized as much as it can. Most of the time, aspects of sites do not need to be dynamic but are, caching systems help greatly in improving performance.

Bluehost also offers a high CPU server for $20 a month I read on this forum.
100K pageviews seems around the max without hitting CPU quota for me.
Yesterday it got really busy and I got hammered 20 times with the CPU error.
First time ever this happened on such a big scale, 150K pageviews btw.

There are some pretty big sites on bluehost and if your scripts are optimized it can be done. By the way with that many page views you can easily monetize your site in a way that it should pay for the cost of a VPS at least.

why pay more!... cutting down the cost.
thats one of the reason... how a business is going to be success
:D costing... and no wasting

I make nothing out of my site, when I calculate the time I put in it it costs me over 50K a month, I better start gettingsome income out of it :)
On average I have 50K pageviews per day, but my site is pretty cut down (basic HTML, stripped Coppermine) so other sites with only 500 pageviews per day might put more strain on the CPU as I view some other people complaining about CPU errors.
When my site will keep growing in traffic I will switch to a high CPU plan and I hope BH will come up with VPS in the future because I like BH and don't want to switch to another host unless there absolutely no other way to keep my site up and running.
By the way I'm not even consuming 5% of the storage and bandwith I'm entitled to each month, so don't call me a heavy user ;)
