What is an AVatar? Is it a jpeg, a gif, png or some other image file?

Where does one go to create or obtain one?

And while on the topic? What is a favicon and how does one create one?

Avatar is a wee picture. See FAQs related to user maintenance.

You can google "avatar" and find a gazillion of them.

make one yourself using photoshop or something. avatar are usually 80x80 100x100, 65x65 pixel. it can be gif or jpeg.

favicon is the small icon next to your site URL in the address bar. to create one you need some kind of icon making program. but i think there are site that do it for you for free, just upload a picture and it'll do the rest.

upload the favicon to the root directory of your site and you should have your own little smal icon next to your URL.

Search these forums for "favicon," and you'll find several threads discussing how to create them, why they don't work properly in IE, etc.

for the Favicon make shure that you delete the one that bluehost has put in there if you upload your own. there are a lot of programs that you can use to create your image for that you want to make sure that the size is 16x16 or 32x32 so hope that helped.
