hey all,
okay, so I'm pretty new at this. I am building a website for my baseball team, and they want a message board, but I can't seem to figure out how to get one up. I downloaded and uploaded all the files from phpBB. Is there a way to get a message board right from BlueHost? It tells me to run install.php but I can't figure out the path for that from the file manager. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You should delete the PHPBB files that you've already uploaded and Fantastico will automatically install it for you. Go into Fantastico from the control panel and you can install PHPBB2 directly from there. Once you click on PHPBB2, you will see a link for New Installation. When you begin the installation, it will request the subdirectory where you want to install the forum and and various information like admin username and password. Just fill in requested information and go through the steps that come up.

Have you looked at the phpBB site for instructions on how to install. I believe they have guides to help and all in all its not too hard. I would advise AGAINST installing it through fantastico. Fantasico installs normally have a lot of trouble and you have to end up getting rid of and reinstalling manually afterwards. So generally you save yourself that extra step by installing yourself. As I said you should go over to the phpBB site and read up on how to install and see if that helps before going to fantastico for help. Just my opinion.

I've never had any problems with Fantastico. What would installing it yourself do differently other than making you do it manually? Fantastico just simplifies the process, but it installs just like if you were to do it yourself.

Fantasico does not always install things right. Sometimes it works and works great but there have been a lot of cases where it doesn't install things properly. I have heard from plenty of people who have had messed up fantastico installs and have had to uninstall and later install themselves manually. I myself have had fantastico not installing things right. My first few installs from it worked like a charm but I have had some since that did not go right at all. From that I have learned that the best thing you can do is learn to install these things yourself and correctly this way you don't have such problems. Thats why I advised against using it.

I agree Do NOT use Fantastico ... something about it made my installations screwy but they work fine when I did the installations manually. Also the last update to phpBB just came out last week and I doubt Fantastico has updated yet. Also if you install any mods or themes you wont be able to use Fantastico to do the upgrade anyways.
Oh your install link will be of the form ... http://www.your_site.com/your_forum/install/install.php
But be sure you created your MySQL database and associated a user with it. You will need to now the database_name, user_name and databse_password to finish the installation.
