Optimize database

I have a Coppermine gallery, I read that we are supposed to optimize and or index the tables but I haven't got a clue how to do that. I don't even know where to look
Can anyone explain to me how to do it please?:o

last time i research on coppermine before, and quit many user complaining its slow running in shared hosting server. Due to database and GD and cpu issues as well.

indexing from mysql table directly. backup before doing it. As you are changing the key field. And test the site after done.
