    Default File restrictions?

    Hi all

Im thinking about joining blue host and wondering if there are any file extention restrictions and/or file size restrictions. Also whats the average download speed from bluehost's servers?

Reason I ask is being able to upload legal MP3's in the 100MB region

    Thanks

There aren't any filesize restrictions or filetype restrictions so long as you don't go over your 15GB disk quota.

The download speed can vary and may be slower or faster at times, but overall I have found it to be very fast, most of my files download from home off my server at around 350kb/sec average
I may not be smart enough to do everything, but I'm dumb enough to try anything.

PS I no longer work for Bluehost, any posts from me may not be official company policies or views and should not be associated with Bluehost.

I'm afraid I need to correct you on this statement as bluehost does have a 2gb filesize restriction when you use ftp, but not when you use ssh. Of course the problem with ssh is that you cannot create unique accounts for ssh. You can circumvent the filesize restriction however by using a file splitter application. Perhaps that's even a better way to go because if you use gsplit, for instance, it verifies file integrity. Even with that I still use md5 checksum.

There are no restrictions on file extensions. You have control over mime type/extension handling. Get a good ftp client and you shouldn't have problems uploading 100MB's at a time.

Average DL speed varies. I've seen about 500Kbps my self but it depends on how many are transferring at once. If you expect to serve large files to large amounts of users then don't expect good results.

    edit:whoops, beat me to it.

There are file size restrictions for ftp in terms of file downloads. Specifically, bluehost utilizes pureftp as the ftp server and there is a 2gb file size limit. But if you don't need to create unique accounts, then you can use ssh via your main account and upload and download files of unlimited size. Also, if you do need to create unique ftp accounts and need to work with files larger than 2gb, then you can use a file splitter application such as gsoft (that's what I do). Other than that, I like bluehost eventhough they would not tell me about the 2gb file size limit for ftp; I had to figure this out myself.
