    Default WordPress 2.6 and Fantastico

Four days ago I upgraded my Wordpress installations on other hosts to 2.6 via Fantastico in the Control Panel.

Bluehost offers Fantastico DELUXE on my account but I noticed that the latest WP version listed is 2.5.1. When I upgraded to 2.5.1 last time, it was ready to go a few days after 2.5.1 was announced.

I wrote to Blue support and the first responder told me Fantastico would be updated soon but to go ahead and use SimpleScript to update. The support person didn't realize that Simple Script would overwrite all my custom files. I might as well do it manually. Fantastico, on the other hand, doesn't require backup since it leaves themes and plugins alone.

Next support person told me same thing but added that I could easily backup my custom folders. I use this particular install as a testing ground for themes and plugins and it has dozens of themes. They take forever to upload and download (for backup).

It's now four days later. I have hosting accounts at several different companies (Dreamhost, Lunarpages, etc) and at ALL the other hosts, Fantastico or the host's internal scripts use version 2.6.

I signed up for Blue last year because they they were recommended on the WordPress site as a premium Wordpress host.

So I'm puzzled why it would take so long to update to 2.6. Maybe there's something wrong specifically with my control panel?

Does anyone else have 2.6 as an option in Fantastico?

BlueHost are in the process of dropping Fantastico because the people at Fantastico always take forever to update the versions of the scripts that they offer. That is why they introduced SimpleScripts as a replacement for Fantastico which they guarantee will be updated to allow new versions to be installed immediately (since they control what SimpleScripts offers) rather than weeks or months later through Fantastico (which they have no control over whatsoever).

If you have problems with Fantastico then the best people to complain to are those at Fantastico.

I didn't know Fantastico had 2.6, as I upgraded to 2.5. I have issues with 2.5 right now.

Regardless of whether you are having issues or not, you should always upgrade to the latest revision offered. Revisions are usually the result of security holes that have been discovered and a hacker might be able to use one of those doorways to not only compromise your site, but the entire server!
