If you have a new domain, you have to wait for DNS propagation before your site will be accessible by the domain name. This is not the responsibility of Bluehost - there's nothing they can do to make this happen any faster. How long it takes depends partly on what DNS server you are using. When I signed up, my domain became available within an hour - I use the OpenDNS servers, which seem to get updated very quickly. If you're using some other DNS servers, it might take a couple of days.

Second, have you, in fact, put an index.html file in the public_html directory of your space? Have you deleted the default.html file that was there to start with?

Every PC has to point to a DNS server somewhere. A DNS server is like a phone book - your PC uses it to look up domain names, and translate them into numeric IP addresses, just the way you have to look up someone's name in a phone book to find out the actual number to call. You can't dial "Joe Blow" on your phone, and expect the call to go through. Similarly, the Internet doesn't know where example.com is - it has to find out what the real, numeric address is.

Your ISP probably has its own DNS servers, and your PC is probably automatically configured to use them, but they may not be very good - they might be very slow to get updated. But you can point your PC to any DNS server you want. The OpenDNS site has instructions for how to configure your PC to use their servers instead of the ones your ISP is providing.

Most people accessing the internet use the Domain Name Servers supplied by their ISP. Some ISPs update their DNS several times a day to pick up changes to where domains are located while others only update their DNS every few days. Where the specific DNS doesn't list a given site the request is passed to another DNS which also may or may not have been updated. Most DNS will have picked up a given change within 72 hours which is why that figure is often quoted as the amount of time to wait for your domain to become accessible to everyone. This is dependent on the frequency at which the different DNS are updated and has nothing to do with where you have your hosting.

As quickly as OpenDNS entries seem to get updated, I have to wonder if they don't perform a thorough search if a URL isn't found. I've had a 404 page turn into a valid page in a matter of just several minutes.

This means that your site is online, but you have NO content uploaded, OR you did not delete default.html

The issue here is not the DNS servers. If you go to your domain and see a Bluehost page, then the DNS servers are fine. You need to delete the default.html file and upload your own content with a file named index.html. Then you will see your website online.
