Installation NOT in a subdirectory

Are you able to install Joomla 1.5 without installing it in a subdirectory? I'm using Simple Scripts and I get this warning before entering the installation process:

Warning: This directory contains at least 27 files that may be overwritten if you install here. (ex. 117525_1219176424.tar, 117525_1219176487.tar, 129207_1217563000.tar)

Will it mess stuff up if I install it in my public_html without it being a subdirectory folder?
