Question ddos attack last wednesday, anyone else? why me?

our website and hosting have been cancelled by bluehost because we are the supposedly the reason for a ddos attack. "someone is out to get us"

this doesn't make any sense. we are a very small musical group. bluehost is saying we must have enemies, but isn't it more likely that bluehost is the actual target. those annoying idiots who pull these type of attacks, i'm sure are very satisfied to see bluehost go down, not us.

was any one else out there cancelled last week? or affected by this attack?

i've also read that ddos attacks have been happening a lot more lately against "larger companies"

feedback would be great. i'm very frustrated. already moved my site, but what a pain in the ass!

    thanks

No problem here! Sorry to here about the issues. That stinks that bluehost cancelled your service.

With over 1.2 million domains (among BH, HM, and FD) on shared hosting, I suppose they just can't spend too much time working with one customer to solve issues like these. And they certainly can't let problems with one customer's site bring the other ~900 domains on that server to a screeching halt while they try to deal with the problem.

If a site is the target of a DDOS attack, they don't have much choice but to drop that customer. If it was, in fact, just your site that was attacked, then you can be fairly certain that it was targeted. If someone just wanted to make life miserable for BH, they wouldn't target just one domain.

If a site is causing performance issues, I'm sure the owner of that site would like to be given the opportunity to fix the problem. But if you happen to be sharing a box with the problem site, you don't want to wait for the fix to happen - you want the problem site gone, and fast!

Mine was too and I called them on it... the real problem was that my site was too large due to a site backup and a gallery2 backup (upgraded gallery). The notice they send out is a generic statement and probably isn't due to your site causing performance problems.

    How big was your site?

It's funny what actions BH does act on and the ones they don't. I've tried getting them to help other clients that were clearly compromised and they refused. I ended up contacting them myself.

So if a site hosted at BH gets attacked, BH will take the site down permanently. In essence, helping the attacker complete their mission and doing nothing towards the attackers. Very interesting...

What is your proposed alternative? How many resources do you expect BH to dedicate to the problem, in exchange for $7 a month?

Now, imagine that your site is sharing a box with the DDOS target. How do you feel about it?
