Default Add-on domains listed as subdomains?

I was just looking at my list of subdomains from cPanel and found that each of my add-on domains is listed as a subdomain. Is it necessary to keep them there or can I safely remove them from the subdomain list? (As far as I know, the subdomain access URL is never used. I don't ever use it anyway.)

A semi-related question: I use Hot-Link protection and I may have unnecessarily included a number of entries in my 'allowed' list.

In the '.htaccess' file, does 'HTTP_REFERER' detect both the 'www.example.com' and 'example.com' forms of the URL from a single entry? If so, would I enter the domain name with the 'www.' portion or without it?

I have observed this also. When assigning a domain as "add-on" the form for this forces you to set up a sub-domain and says, "this is for your convenience." LOL!

My concern is that Google will index it and that this sub domain will show up in all the indexes with the same content as my add-on domain.

The sub domain cannot be removed after completing the assignment form. I tried.

I also tried to change the folder the sub-domain points to so I could at least password protect the sub domain directory and put a robots.txt file there just to be sure it doesn't get touched by any spiders. This didn't work either.

For now I went to sub domains->Manage Redirection and have redirected the sub domain to the add-on domain.

What I need to know is what type of redirect is this? Is it 301? 302? I can't seem to be able to tell from any of the web tools.

Your help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

When you add an addon domain xyz.com to your main domain example.com you need three things

    1. A folder to put the content in - example.com/ghi
    2. A subdomain to access the stats through - jjj.example.com
    3. the domain itself - xyz.com

As the last of these three is the only one you will ever create links to no one and nothing is going to find the other two except you - especially if you make the folder and sub-domain names really hard to guess values. No one has enough millions of years of spare tiime to work through all the possible combinations to see if something exists on any of them.

The way the hosting is set up you can't have one without having all three.

    Enter both.

I'm having this problem right now. I created an addon domain at xyz.example.com for site xyz.com but when you google the site, the official listing comes up with www.example.com listed as the web address, and if you click on it the url in the address bar shows as example.com/xyz/.

Nothing is pointing to the sub-domain address as far as I know. All of my links point to the individual URL of the addon domain.

    How can I fix this??

    Thanks!

You must have created at least one link to it using the folder name at some point since that's the only way that a search engine could find out the name of the folder it is in.

It is also better if you make all three of the entries completely separate so that xyz.com is at subdomain abc.example.com and in folder example.com/def.

Default Folder Different from Subdomain different from Addon Domain.com HELP?

This makes great sense. However I am about to set up my first addon domain, and it looks like the control panel interface sets it up so all three are identical - IE ghi=jjj=xyz.

I checked the help documents, the forum and the knowledgebase but I did not see any obvious way to make them different.

    Can someone please explain this?

    Thank you.

    Thumbs up

I did receive this response to a support ticket asking the same thing, hopefully it will be helpful to others as well:

You will just go to the assign domain tool and specify what folder and then define the subdomain. It does not have to match or have any relevance in the site it just needs to be defined when the domain is assigned to the account.

To add a domain to your account, please follow our video tutorial: http://tutorials.bluehost.com/adddomainreg/
