Default What is a subdomain and how to do?

If I want to install a forum and photo gallery for http://losingface.net do I have to create sub-domains and install them there? I went to install a forum and there was a Caution! note that said it would over write the existing website.

So do I go to that sub-domain icon on the cPanel and create one like forums/losingface.net and photos/losingface.net? Is that how it is done? Then do I put the URL's to these sub-domains on my home page to make them part of my website?

I appreciate everyone bearing with my ignorance here.
    Thanks for your help!

A subdomain prefixes your domain as subdomain.example.com.

If you're using SimpleScripts you need to specify a directory for it to install to, if the directory exists it's going to warn you about overwriting files because that's what it's going to do.

Unless you want a subdomain (forums.example.com) instead of a directory (example.com/forums), you should go back and remove the subdomain, then tell SimpleScripts to install to example.com/forums.

If you do want the subdomain then just tell SimpleScripts to install there.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Thanks so much for all the help! I haven't yet created any sub-domain. I just want to create the forum and gallery for http://losingface.net the easiest way possible.

How do I avoid overwriting the site already up? Do I have to create "directories"? There's the problem! I don't even know what a directory IS! I mean, I am only used to posting stuff on websites that do all this stuff automatically

So I really do appreciate all the help. I know I probably don't have any business posting here because I don't know what I am doing, but I just want everyone to know how much I really appreciate the help and advice.

I tried to work around some of the things I don't know how to do in ways that I know will prevent my website from getting the exposure it used to get from the content when it was on MSN... like the pages.. I posted some of them on Google docs and linked those URL's to the page. Example: http://www.losingface.net/?page_id=82

But then the content of these pages won't be "crawled", is that correct?

Also, if I want to include individual photos on a page, where do I upload all the photos TO so they will appear in my pages when I put them there? I saw another post somewhere that said only the person creating the website could see them because he didn't upload them into the proper place/folder.

It must be easier to transfer all this stuff from http://groups.msn.com/LosingFace/ than the way I am doing it.

    Thanks again!
