PHP + zip / tar flies on the fly

I have a new site in the planning, it will provide the download of quicktime movies for this irish musican i am doing it for.

now rather than keeping two copies of the file on line, one been in mov format and the other in zip/tar format, can I script php in such away that the server can compress the file on the fly, so to speak, when a user clicks a link?
