Chmod? Security Settings?

Hello,

I have been hearing alot about chmod settings etc. I read on a message board that you do not want your public html folder to be 777, I was wondering what you want it to be.

Also, how do I go about figuring out what I am suppose to set my other folders to etc?

Also, is there any software that can check the security of my site and/or how do I go about making sure mysite is secure from hackers etc.?
