    Default taking control of site!

Hi, i've trawled a bit and cant find a post similar, if there is one can someone point me in the right direction?

ok a friend of a friend created my site for me on the cheap, i paid for hosting, domain etc on bluehost and gave the guy access to create a site for me. I now want to change the site a bit or create a new one altogether. I cant afford to pay someone to do this so i'm gonna have a go myself.

I have full access to my account and cpanel obviously but literally don't know where to start.

If i was starting from scratch it might be easier but my site all'ready exists so what do i need to install script wise?

any help much appreciated as i dont want to start again somewhere else.
    ta

What you'll need to do depends on how your friend initially set up the site.

You'll first need to determine if he installed Content Management System software (such as Wordpress, Joomla, or some other package) or if he created the site using static HTML pages.

If he used CMS software, you can log in as the admin and make changes through the package's control panel. There are tutorials available for the major packages that walk you through the process of making changes.

If he created the site with static HTML pages, you can download the site's HTML files and edit them on your local machine. There are any number of HTML editors available for free download which will allow you to do this.

It sounds like you can't ask your friend how he built the site. Is that the case?

Even without his help, you can use cPanel's File Manager function to look at the files and subfolders in the folder 'public_html'.

If you see subfolders named 'css', images', and the like and a file named 'index.html', it's a pretty safe bet that the site consists of static HTML pages.

If you see folders named 'administrator', 'cache', 'components', and a whole bunch of others, the site was probably made with Joomla (or possibly some other content management system.)

Determining how the site was built is your first step in figuring out how to approach changing it.
