Public vs. private folders

As I understand it, public folders contain data that can be observed...by the public and data in private folders cannot be observed by the public, but only by operations within BH? If this is true, why can't I put almost all of my apps in private folders?

Because unless the part that generates the web page is in the public folder then no one will be able to use it. Since most apps do not arrange their folder structure so as to provide for public and private parts you would need to do a major rewrite to allow the other parts of it to be moved out of the public folder.

You could have all of the app apart from the part that represents the actual web page in a private folder provided that you write the actual app to work that way.

With most apps the only part people move to a private folder is the config file which can easily be moved by replacing the original with an include statement pointing to the copy in the private folder.
