File Manager Questions from Newbie

First let me say that I just finished my first ever Wordpress site with the Headway theme and I am so happy with it, but that said, I am a total newbie when it comes to this kind of stuff so please help - what is the easiest way to do this:

I am using a Tell a Friend WP plugin that sends out a free gift as a thank you when someone "tells a friend" on my site. I have my own small PDF ebooks that are my thank you gift. I don't know where to start with the file manager. I need to put them in a location that is secure - not "public". How do I change the location and to what?

I also need to know what the correct permission numbers would be if I am going to use this file as a download?

Can I upload a zip file?

And finally - how do I find the file URL?

If you need to protect it from the visitors and give it to select people, I guess you need to do some coding in PHP / customization for the plugin you are using. If it is not very imporant, you can simply have it anywhere downloadable with a difficult to guess filename / directory name. I dont think you need any real security, as this is going to be free for anyone who fill a form. Basic tricks to hide it should do.
