AWStats in Firefox?

Couldn't agree more. I was quoting stats from my retail site... our product range is such that we attract a lot of silver surfers and internet innocents, yet we still see low usage of IE. I am admin on a distributed computing forum, where folks are more savvy about this sort of thing... the proportion of Windows users is still high, but IE is a rarity... most use FF or Opera.

And my site isnt even open yet! That means these stats arent trust worthy, or people cant wait for me to open.



Bottom line, after Windows and MS IE, I have a line for Unknown, and then comes firefox.. Its ok to have your page compatible with firefox, but using firefox on windows is not smart. It messes your windows up simply because windows doesnt like other browser present.


And for the super surfer. lol. try uninstalling firefox, your windows installation will become crap.

Well, perhaps the reason is because if you are still in development then the majority of your visitors / hits are coming from you using Windows and IE. Just a guess...

My Top 10 browser stats from December 2006 and January 2007, respectively, through AWStats:

• 58.2% / 55.8% unknown(!)
• 30.5% / 33.6% IE
• 7.9% / 6.8% FireFox

and then the rest is two percent or far less for both months.

I prefer FireFox myself but either browser works for me.

You can get a lively discussion going by making outrageous statements like that, but eventually people may decide you're just trolling. Anyways, I'll bite: I've used Firefox on Windows for years without any problems and until today, I have never heard anybody say it "messes up" Windows.

I dont visit my site. I have a testing server on linux machine here, and thats where I develop my site. So when I do visit its from firefox and using linux.


Honestely, I see no reason using anything other than IE. IE is great, especially IE7. I only use firefox on Linux, because thats the only good thing avaialble for linux.

I liked the old Netscape browser. It interacted with Windows great, and showed all the sites I visited right. But with Mozilla and now Firefox, things arent as smooth as Netscape had it. And they suppose to be based on same technology. When using firefox on windows, and if you are able to stand that it isnt really compatible with windows, for example it messes up your installation if you decide to uninstall it. The biggest problem is the load time. IE is preloaded into memory as it is integrated with Windows Explorer, firefox has to be loaded, and every time you launch it it takes longer. It is so annoying.

And how about Favorites? It uses its own bookmart system, while completely ignoring windows favorites, which is defacto standard on windows since IE4, and makes browsing so much easier and streamlined.

A web designer needs to test their web pages on numerous web browsers to make sure that they are usable. I have about 15 different browsers on my computer including several versions each of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape, and Opera as well as a webTV emulator and Lynx which is a text only browser. When you have a site on the internet your visitors will be using the browser of their choice and if your page doesn't work in their browser it is your fault not theirs.

Internet Explorer 7 is about 8 years behind the standards in what it actually can handle compared to modern browsers. There are thousands of things that can be done with modern browsers that malfunction in IE because of it being so far behind. Unfortunately there are still a large percentage of people using this antiquated browser and so we can't ignore that portion of our audience. Fortunately Microsoft have promised to try to bring things more up to date in Internet Explorer 8 although we will still have to wait a year or two to see just how much more up to date they manage to make it.

Each browser has its advantages and disadvantages. Unfortunately most of the advantages of IE relate to the fact that it comes preinstalled and is easy to use. The disadvantages relate to how it does not handle a lot of CSS code correctly and supports a lot of proprietary codes that encourage people to create internet explorer pages rather than web pages which therefore make their content inaccessible to the growing number of people moving to more modern browsers. The biggest disadvvantage that the modern browsers have is that you have to download and install them yourself and most web newbies don't even realise that they exist let alone how much more powerful than IE that they are.

I had installed FireFox 1.5 and IE 6.0 and liked FF better. When the new versions were released, I upgraded to FF 2.0 and IE 7.0. FF 2.0 has been a disappointment (CSS doesn't render properly, sluggish performance, freezes and crashes, some plugins don't work) but I have kept IE 7. I like IE 7!
