I'd really love to help rid this forum of the bot epidemic. I use my own highly modified version of a "captcha" script on my website for email functions. Admittedly, I don't track email form usage (I really should add some kind of logging function to it), but considering the proprietary nature of the script, I doubt there'd be a bot that could crack it. Surprisingly, the fully proprietary nature of my entire website has almost completely warded off bots, except for one time I opened up the comments script to anonymous users for one day, I got two bots spamming their crap in one of my news articles. *scoff*
I hadn't even thought of the whole "posting the image on a pr0n site" thing. That's actually pretty brilliant. Employ thousands of unsuspecting pr0n site browsers to do your image-decoding. No better script than that! That brings into perfect validity the whole "What is 2+2?" thing. Sometimes the English language itself is more complicated than a funked-up image. The fatal flaw in image-verification is that you can just move the image somewhere else and still have it done automatically, just "away from home".
Any Bluehost guys considering adding a different type of human-verification mod?
I need to figure out how to add that mod...
I somehow managed to make it to were when someone trys to register I get an email and have to aprove or deny each registrant. I posted a thread that says you can only have forum names that have a first name, middle initial, and last name. If the given names don't follow that format, I just don't give them permission.
That worked VERY well. As the spambots don't read the forums it was very easy to pick out the spammers vs true users. That particular forum was running and old version of phpBB. I've recently added PNUKE with phpBB embeded and it dosen't seem to have that feature. Its been a constant battle with spammers. Although I've been having fun with them by using the foul language feature that replaces words with other words. So when someone types in something like SEX, it is replaced with "Silly ill minded madness" - totally messes up their URL's and renders them usless - but they still do post the stuff.
Definately need to figure out how to update for the new anti-bot mod
It is a simple installation - what are you having problems with?
