Default Wanting to cheat to make a nice looking site. :P

Ok,
I was just wondering if there is an easier way than coding my site myself.
To making a site. I mean, coding it is fine with me, but I was just wondering if there is some program where I could like, drag things and place them and add links and everything like such as.

Thanks!

Hi -

There's no reason that you could not "copy" the look of another site, so long as you aren't breaking any copyright rules (I'm not a lawyer so don't ask me to further define this). There are a few "drag and drop" or WYSIWYG programs out there that might work for you; I believe Dreamweaver has this ability and there are a few other programs with similar traits. Just my two cents, however; by building your site from scratch, you gain the advantage of better understanding the structure of the code itself. It makes it easier to make changes or resolve issues that pop up down the road.

Frontpage will also do it. If you go to a large computer store like Frys, etc there are quite a number of $30-40 programs that have the WYSIWYG interface.

Frontpage is such an antiquated heap of junk that Microsoft declared it officially dead rather than trying to fix it.

The only web editor you can buy from Microsoft now is "Expression Web".

The best WYSIWYG web editor you can buy is "Dreamweaver".

If you want a free WYSIWYG web editor then the best are "Kompozer" and "NVU". (very similar since the first is based on the second).

There is a software-as-a-service you might check out called WebEditorPlus

I know and respect the owners so I thought I give them a plug.

I use Drupal. its an application you install on your website, then you use a web interface to build your site. You add pages, add text, create links, etc. You don't have to do any HTML if you don't want to. its also very customizable and has lots of plugins.

Drupal is actually a nice CMS. There is a learning curve to go with it though. And Drupal has nice mods and plug-ins that make life easier. But why not just learn HTML and CSS? It will help you down the road.

Will Kompozer or Dreamweaver do frames? I know that NVU will not. If you are new to webdesign frames make things a little simpler though I understand they do not process as quickly.

A new web designer should definitely avoid using frames. Future web browsers will be dropping support for frames and will use objects instead. Anything that can be done with frames can be done better without.

I am certainly only slightly above beginner, but I use Namo Web Editor 2006. Pretty powerful an dhas many 'wizards' to help beginners but has lots of advanced features.
